This article is educational and not medical or mental-health advice. If you feel unsafe or overwhelmed, consider reaching out to a qualified professional or a domestic-violence support organization.

Recovery from narcissistic abuse often takes longer than people expect because you are not only getting over a relationship. You are rebuilding your sense of reality, identity, judgment, nervous-system safety, and trust in your own perceptions.

If you keep wondering why you are not “over it yet,” consider this: confusion was part of the injury. Of course clarity takes time.

You are recovering from more than a breakup

Emotional abuse can train you to doubt yourself. You may have been criticized, blamed, dismissed, idealized, devalued, ignored, or pulled into cycles that made you chase relief. When the relationship ends, your body may still be waiting for the next shift.

The nervous system does not heal on command

You can understand something intellectually before your body feels safe. You may know the relationship was harmful and still miss the person. You may know that less contact—or no voluntary contact where it is safe and realistically available—would protect your recovery and still feel pulled to check, explain, or prove. That does not make you weak. It means the attachment system is unwinding.

What healing often requires

  • Time away from the cycle.
  • Support from people who do not minimize the harm.
  • Body-based calming practices.
  • Rebuilding routines, money, friendships, and identity.
  • Learning what boundaries feel like before they feel natural.

Do not measure healing by nostalgia

Missing someone does not mean they were safe. Remembering good moments does not erase the pattern. Healing includes holding the whole truth without turning one sweet memory into a reason to abandon yourself.

What I would keep

Slow healing is not failure. It is evidence that the wound reached deep places. You are not behind. You are rebuilding the parts of you that had to disappear to survive.
