Why People Bully: Understanding Hurtful Behavior Without Excusing It

The useful question is usually smaller than the emotional one: what is this relationship repeatedly showing me?

What Bullying Tries to Control

Bullying often uses fear, humiliation, exclusion, or repeated criticism to create power over another person. Whether it happens in childhood, work, family, or adult friendships, the pattern teaches the target to shrink.

  • The bully controls attention.
  • The bully controls social belonging.
  • The bully controls what feels safe to say.
  • The bully makes others perform for approval.
  • The bully benefits when bystanders stay quiet.

Do Not Make Their Wound Your Assignment

A person may bully because of insecurity, entitlement, learned behavior, or fear of losing status. That context may explain the behavior, but you are not responsible for healing someone who is harming you.

What Protection Can Look Like

  • Name the behavior accurately.
  • Keep records in workplace or legal contexts.
  • Limit access where possible.
  • Find witnesses and support.
  • Stop negotiating for dignity with someone who uses humiliation as a tool.

What I would keep

Clarity is not cruelty. You can tell the truth about what happened, protect your peace, and still choose the next right step with dignity.
